Starting a conversation that leads somewhere | Forum

A good first message is short, warm and specific. A good conversation after that is patient and honest. A few ideas that work:

  • Open with something real. Mention one thing from their profile that caught your eye, then ask a question about it. "Hello" on its own gives them nothing to reply to.
  • Ask about life, not only looks. Work, family, hobbies, what a good weekend looks like, what they hope for in a marriage.
  • Be honest early. Say what you are looking for, whether you want children, and what matters most to you. It saves both of you time and heartache.
  • Let it move at a natural pace. Reply when you can, and do not pressure anyone for quick answers, photos or personal details.
  • Listen as much as you talk. Follow up on what they tell you. People remember being listened to.
  • Know when to meet. After a few good conversations, move to a video call, then a first meeting in a public place. See the safety post at the top of Staying Safe Online.
  • Respect a no. If someone is not interested, thank them and move on. Kindness costs nothing and people talk.
